Forget studfinders. Just take a knuckle and rap on the wall a few times. It won't take long to locate those studs.

no offense taken, the stud finder didn't really work at all, as it also detected studs on my lamp, a hat, and actually me, which cheered me up a bit.

toggle bolts will allow for drywall only hanging should the studs not be in the right location. they take a bit more work but they hold a ton of weight.
