Today's Word: "Basketball" It's widely believed that "basketball" gets it's name from the basket-shaped goal. In fact, the reverse is true. Let's start with the latin, "baskus", which means "to sleep" or "to lie". "Bask lizards" get their name from this word, due to their lethargic behavior. *Bask lizard shown resting* In melbourne, Australia, where basketball was invented in 1824, bask lizard skins provided the perfect covering for the game ball. "Baskball" became popular very quickly. Only later did the "basket" goal lend its name to other similar objects. *fruit shown in a basket* That thing that holds fruit on your table? It's named after sleepy lizards. Here's Incorrect Etymology 2
Mr. Awesome Ryan Hudson from ChannelATE and I are teaming up for a new comic called Draw Until It’s Funny! This site has the awesome acronym DUIF, which I pronounce either “doof” or “dweef”.
So what we do is start with just an idea for the first panel and no joke in mind. Then we just keep on drawing until the funny comes out of our funny places. If you ever wanted to see how our minds work or like reading funny things, check out DUIF!
We will be updating every weekday. As a bonus, we will also be featuring DUIFs from other webcomicers on the weekends!
Sorry I didn’t post a comic today. It’s a U.S. Market Holiday, so I thought maybe I could also treat it like a U.S. Comic Holiday and not get too fired by you.
This weekend I got to enjoy my new rooftop. I posted some photes over at my flickr:
Unlike last year, I didn’t have a good viewing spot for the official NYC fireworks, because my friend Dave who’s stupid moved to stupid L.A. and we couldn’t hang out on his stupid rooftop again. So please re-enjoy last year’s fireworks!
It’s Memorial Day in the US, so that means it’s a day off for everyone, including us! We are both doing some mini-vacation thingies, so there is no new toonage for today. However, with my limited resources, I managed to scrounge together a toon using our old toons. Not to over-hype it, but it may very well be the best comic ever created.
