Hacking

I’m watching Swordfish right now.  I think I actually do like this movie, but right now, the main scene where Hugh Jackman is programming the worm is on and it’s hilarious.  It makes programming seem action-packed and exciting.  There are all these colors and visual representations of his code on the screen as he pounds away at the keyboard.  There was a program that showed up on the screen as he was doing his thing.  It was a worm generator tool.  How convenient! He occasionally stands up and smiles as he programs his masterpiece.  He gets angry as his code somehow falls apart due to some oversight of his.  It’s great.

    Too Loud – May 7, 2008

  4. Dean says:

Don't know what getup you have, but mine is six-screen three-keys. I thought that was standard? :ohyes:

I remember once watching the film and the only scene that sticks into my head is the standard car chase. Can't think of a film without one.

    More importantly, WHERE'S THE STICKMEN?

    • Heidi says:

I was wondering the same thing!!!

What's with the new art style?

      Just testing it?

      Your stick people are better.

      • justin says:

Just messing around with some new little people looking things. They may pop up here and there, or they may not, who knows!

And don't worry, the stick people will not go away. That's what I do best =P

    • Moop :D says:

omg yeah everyone loves the stick men!!

but, how would stickmen draw stickmen???

      just wondering…

  5. Heidi says:

Never seen the movie, but I know what you're talking about.

I guess they're trying to make it more interesting that normal coding… which most people don't find interesting.

They're trying to make it exciting or something.

    Silly

    movie stuff.

    Yeah

    but

    Today is Geek Day.

    :D

    Look it up.

    It's on Wikipedia.

  6. Pinka says:

LMAO XD that is a mis-representation. i lived with programmers who could hack. its so not action packed. except when they unleashed a funny virus on a friend and couldn't get rid of it. lol

  7. Cass says:

How about some right handed toons by left handed peeps… not trying to kill the funniness of anything……

    • Kev says:

Because the majority of the population are right-handed =p

    • Yakboy says:

As a fan who's a lefty, I second this idea.

    • Heidi says:

The whole point of this webcomic is not that they're drawing with their left hands, it's the fact that they're drawing with their non-dominant hands.

  8. dave says:

I like colorful 3D cube worm generation … hell thats exactly what we did in EECS 280 right after programming that monopoly game ;) Everytime I hear this scene, I think about the Hackers movie … just as classy and realistic…

  9. KK says:

I accidentally rented Swordfish when I meant to get Rumble Fish. Terrible mistake.

Is the scene you reference better than the one where they tested his skills by forcing him to hack while otherwise preoccupied? That film was awful.

  10. Patrick says:

I haven't seen Swordfish, but I think that the 1995 classic Hackers with Angelina Jolie and Penn Jillette might beat it in terms of elaborate graphic representations of coding. Especially since the thought of my computer in 1995 (75 Mhz, 1.2 GB Hard Drive, 8 MB of RAM) displaying the images Hackers promotes is completely absurd, never mind the fact that footage from Hackers was constantly what was going on inside the computer. And it had Penn Jillette.

    …And it had Penn Jillette.

Drew, I love the most recent math poem, but I'm confused about the last line. Is it some sort of math trivia that tragically unfamiliar with, or is it acting more as a conflict for the poem?

BTW, the nonagon would be gone. No one could ever draw the damn thing in math class.

  15. Neku says:
