Subway: A Method to Their Cheesy Madness

September 10th, 2007

A while back I made a cartoon about Subway’s goofy way of arranging cheese on their sandwiches, and I learned something after posting it up on the site: people are very passionate about cheese. I’ve gotten more commentary on that comic than any other so far.

I recently got an email from a guy named Stu, who said this:

I love your subway cartoon, I work at subway and printed your toon. The staff found it funny, my boss did not!!!

Next day a notice was put up about cheese! And I took a photo to send to you.

Here’s the photo he attached:

simple brilliance

It seems there’s some devious reasoning behind Subway’s practices! They choose to offend geometric decency to make their customers pay more to fill in the missing puzzle pieces! That’s evil genius. Stu also gave me this caveat:

Remember that all subway stores are franchised owned so every store will be run in its own way, and this notice is only from my subway.

And he’s right, so we can’t make the same statement about all Subway locations, but this is the best explanation I’ve seen for why cheese placement might be an important part of a business model. Who knew?

Thanks, Stu.

NYC Things

September 3rd, 2007

Just a couple miles away from me, the US Open has been going on. I don’t really follow tennis, but I feel like I should go one of these years because it just so close! It seems like it could be a lot of fun just wandering the grounds and watching random tennis matches, as long as its not too hot. My parents just came in with their friends for a couple days to watch some of it and they had a lot of fun.

The US Open is just one of many things that I see here and say “I should do that one of these days”. There are tons of art exhibits, street fairs, festivals, concerts, plays, musicals and other things always happening in NYC that I have been missing out on over the past year. Now that my girlfriend has just moved over here with me (yay!), I feel like now it the perfect time to go out and adventure a little. I’m not really the adventurous type, but I do want to go out and see what’s going on.

I know that I may spend a little too much time sitting in front of a computer or TV (or PSP), so going out a little bit definitely can’t hurt. One thing that is definitely on my list, DigitalLife! Still not getting away from technology though, am I =P

Blog Post (in HD)

August 27th, 2007

I’m thinking about making the switch from digital cable over to satellite. I just bought a nice HDTV, but my biggest problem is that Time Warner Cable doesn’t have a lot of HD channels in their lineup. They have Discovery Theater HD, but no Discovery HD or Animal Planet HD. That means no Planet Earth or Blue Planet! They have all the standard local ones like NBC and ABC, but I guess I just want some more channels to make good use of the tv.

That being said, I’ve been looking at Dish Network and it seems pretty sweet. They have a ton of HD channels and also a huge selection of other channels. They even have Gameplay HD, a channel dedicated to gaming! They show tournaments on tv and everything! Sorry, got excited =P

Only thing I would worry about is how trustworthy satellite service is. I’ve never had it before, so I really have very little idea about what to expect. I’ve heard that during storms and when it’s windy, you will may lose signal, but other than that it’s supposed to be pretty good.

Now that I think about it, maybe I’m just switching to get Gameplay HD. It just sounds so cool (if you’re a dork like me =P)
